They may do the job but they are unlikely to improve the look, and even if you're not trying to do something elegant like turn your ride into something which could compete with Chip Foose cars at car shows, it's still something you might want to take the time to do and do right!
Replacing old tatty floor coverings is a fairly inexpensive way to improve your vehicle presuming you don't find any metal damage. If you do find that the frame is much damaged, you may want to strip that particular car for parts and move onto the next design.
